Ice Man

The image of me out there – Ice Man –
it’s only image.  I don’t want to show
how it all comes from the blood, from inside, you know?
I only tell you this now because I’m drunk on sound.
Tomorrow I will deny it.
Blood?  What blood?  I am Bach

Description:  A Well-Mannered Storm explores an imagined correspondence between Glenn Gould – one of Canada’s most brilliant musicians – and “k,” an admiring fan who accidentally comes across his music. When “k” experiences sudden hearing loss in one ear, she finds comfort in Gould’s music while Gould struggles with the difficulties of his own life: his family, his health, his strong beliefs in how music should be presented, and his personal habits, considered “eccentric” by a watchful public.

Critical Comments

Art inspires art, and A Well-Mannered Storm is proof of it. Kate Braid is an accomplished author and poet, and this time turns her inspiration to the music of famed Canadian pianist Glenn Gould. Telling a story through verse of a conversation with Gould and a fan, A Well-Mannered Storm is unique and fine poetry by a master.
